4 Ways to Improve Inner Child Work.

An addict will never feel good enough without inner child work.

12 Steps are complete.
Rehab is conquered.
Therapy is continuing.
Meetings are chipping.

But, you still feel:
Unworthy.
Small.
Incomplete.

Sound familiar?


Dopamine spikes resulting from sober achievements fueled my momentum for the first year after quitting crystal meth. It wasn’t long before my engine stalled and I was coasting on a plateau.

All of the work post-substance was helpful for me to obtain clarity, but also exposed my core wounds. Numbing those wounds brought me to active addiction in the first place.

My instinct told me there was something deep to uncover:

Discovering inner child work unearthed the core of my hurt.
Discovering inner child work provided clear answers to my addiction.
Discovering inner child work brought radical healing and wholeness.

What exactly is your inner child? Many people immediately scoff at this practice because on the surface it sounds very esoteric and supernatural. For that reason, let's take a neuroscientific view:

Your inner child is a neural pathway imprinted at an early age. This imprint is a belief that has controlled your life’s story. A belief that authored addiction.

Inner child work is re-wiring and creating new beliefs.

By healing the inner child, you are given the opportunity to write a new story. You embody radical self-acceptance through deep knowledge of your core wounds.


Here are four directives for effective inner child work:

  1. Perspective.

Get out of your head by eliminating skepticism.

Don’t think of this work as literal time travel.

"I am on a mission to feel whole."

  1. Impression.

Don’t second guess messages from your inner child.

The nervous system speaks first before your own thoughts (go with the first impression).

"I trust in this communication."

  1. Application.

Don’t separate yourself from the inner child.

Whatever needs are expressed by it points to what's missing from your current life.

"I apply all learning in real-time."

  1. Relationship.

Don’t treat the inner child like an acquaintance.

Approach this process the same as if you were dating someone.

"I am curious, listening, and open to learning."


Understanding why your life turned out the way it did is complete liberation. Healing from the belief that you're not good enough brings wholeness. Your inner child holds the key to all of this and more.
